Can you believe it!? We can and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you! For 10-years now, the Cottage City Community Garden has served as a space for health, relaxation, community, nutrition, and fun! We are so excited to celebrate 10-years of community gardening, harvesting great food, great friends, and great memories.
To celebrate 10-years, we’re hoping to raise $2,000 to install solar power to support a drip irrigation system and outdoor lights to support public safety in the evening.
Here’s how you can help us reach that goal:

About the Garden
The Cottage City Community Garden was formed in 2010, as the first community garden in the Port Towns neighborhood in Prince George’s County, Maryland and is supported by the Town of Cottage City. The garden was birthed out of the Port Towns Community Health Collaborative that formed to help increase positive health outcomes in one of the most ethnically diverse and moderately-income communities in the state of Maryland.
Annually, the Cottage City Community Garden works with nearly 200 volunteers, including the Port Towns Youth Council and Prince George’s County’s Summer Youth Employment Program, to bring healthy food to neighbors and organize social and community events to help foster livable and vibrant communities. Each year, the Cottage City Community Garden has expanded its operations providing new opportunities for the local community. In 2020, the garden installed a beehive, 60 square foot compost system, and 15 new growing areas.
The garden partners with social and academic groups of all ages to teach others about the benefits of gardening and building an equitable food system; while also providing daily opportunities to conduct healthy eating and active living opportunities. We also distribute free food to town members as well.
The garden is an active member and frequent partner with the Prince George’s County Food Equity Council helping to draft and advocate for policy solutions to encourage more sustainable and broader access to urban agriculture of all scales through zoning legislation. We have also hosted garden tours and teach-ins to support other community gardens about how to organize safe, healthy, fun community spaces. The garden was instrumental in developing the Town of Cottage City’s Sustainable Plan and is one of the first Community Gardens to be designated as a Sustainable Community Garden in Prince George’s County.
Because the broader community lacks a social space, the Cottage City Community Garden serves as a key community watering hole. As a result, the garden hosts monthly Wind Down Wednesdays and Monthly workshops for community members to interact with each other.
