This year, the Cottage City Community Garden partnered with @soilfulcitydc to grow and harvest Fish Peppers for Soilful’s Pippin Sauce. Fish Peppers are a native to the Caribbean and became popular in the Baltimore Region in the 19th Century in the fish and oyster houses. It was the secret! Artist and War Veteran Horace Pippin was instrumental in helping to save the plants and seeds; as he was trying to use them to treat his arthritis (yes peppers can help with that!) We’re excited to be a part of this effort to preserve local history, make new history and reconnect the Chesapeake’s Historic Foodways to the food stories of today.
