We are happy to share one of our latest news story about the solar bee shed Dave Tilley, an associate professor of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland and a cohort of undergraduate students designed, built, and delivered a beautiful new shed, which now stands adjacent to the Cottage City community garden’s four bee hives.
The first goal of the class, ENST 405 Energy and Environment, was to learn to about environmental accounting, which meant modeling the energy expenditure required to create a shed alongside the passive solar heating and cooling of their design and the energy output of the solar panels.
Along the way, the students learned the construction skills needed to build a real shed and the Cottage City community now has a much needed space to store and manage all the equipment it takes to maintain four active honeybee hives.
